West Asheville could and should be a vibrant, racially integrated neighborhood, where people of all races and ethnicities work and play together. It all starts with the kids in this summer program! DeWayne Barton, founder of Green Opportunities, activist, spoken word poet, and artist will lead the children in a week of creative neighborhood work, while learning about African American culture, history and current issues in Asheville, and working with local black leaders and cultural groups. Kyja Wilburn, director of Equity at Rainbow Community School is the teacher leader for this camp.
Dates: August 1-5, 9am – 4pm daily
Ages: students rising 5th grade – rising 9th grade
Location: Burton Peace Garden and Burton Community Center, West Asheville

Service work in Peace Garden
Spoken Word Poetry
Hood tours
Arts workshops in activism art
Urban dance
African American history
Outdoor play/sports
Meetings with local black leaders, residents, and artists
Cost: $300 per child/ each child brings lunch, snack and water bottle.
