Did you know that you can make inks and dyes from black walnuts?

Our friend, Bill, from the Asheville Nuttery (@ashevillenuts) visited our first graders recently to share about the significance of black walnuts in the Appalachian mountains as part of their Appalachian studies. Bill shared black walnut ink with the class and showed them how much work it takes to get into a black walnut, then everybody had an opportunity to taste a fresh walnut.

This learning opportunity builds on the children's natural curiosity about the black walnut trees on our very own playground! Our trees have been dropping so many walnuts this season and students have enjoyed gathering them up to send to the Asheville Nuttery.

Student-led inquiry at work! This fall students in

Student-led inquiry at work! This fall students in our older preschool class expressed curiosity about skin tone and our teachers embraced their inquiry. They started by reading "Shades of People". Towards the end of the book, our students naturally started comparing their skin tone with their neighbors in the circle and lots of great observations happened. The children noticed what was similar and what was different. They complimented each other on their skin tone and made comparisons to objects or things that matched that color in the world. The last page of the book is a photo of hands together in a circle. When our preschoolers saw the photo they naturally started to do it on their own! It was a touching and beautiful moment of camaraderie and inclusivity. 💜
