Harvest Hoedown – A Success!

Harvest Hoedown – A Success!

The Harvest Hoedown the Best in RCS History!

We outdid ourselves!

The Hoedown was a smashing success!

So many wonderful faces, costumes, and friends came to enjoy the day.

We want to extend a special thank you to parent Stephanie Cody for coordinating the event. We’re also grateful for all the parents who put hours of work and energy to pull the Hoedown off.

Thank you also to all of our business sponsors and businesses who donated to the Hoedown.

There was a booth for fairy hair. There was a booth to take photos (stay tuned to our Facebook page to find your photo!), a cakewalk, a “wine” walk, face painting, and much more.

We had bouncy houses, haunted houses, and magicians.

Family. Food. Fun. And lots of photos!

Enjoy a slideshow of all the photos of the day.

4th Grade Botany Unit – One For the Books

4th Grade Botany Unit – One For the Books

The RCS fourth grade just finished a wonderful unit on all things plants. From photosynthesis to seed growth to planting systems, each student understood a lot about plants by the end of the unit.

Students went to the NC Arboretum at the start of the unit and continued study of plants, processes and systems during the course of their unit.

Student Presentations

Part of the requirements for learning was for 4th graders to present their unit to their parents and families.

On Friday, they had a chance to do just that:

Students went out to the community gardens where they showed their parents the different plants that were growing. They also had a greenhouse where they were growing smaller plants:

Other students showed off their planting systems and explained what was going on with their particular system:

The plant package designs were all part of a bigger part of the unit: the engineering design process:

Students explained their thinking, learning and their conclusions to their parents using their folders:

Students also did a blue-dye experiment to see what would happen as plants grew.

Parents helped create a botanical feast for the botany celebration.

Students’ plants were not quite ready from the school community garden to make a meal with them. That will happen later on. In the meantime, students were able to enjoy good food and fellowship with their families.

Just Another Day at “The Office” for Reed Fornoff

Just Another Day at “The Office” for Reed Fornoff

Rainbow is always thrilled to hear from its alumni!

We just heard from Reed who was finishing a summer term as a park ranger at Sequoia National Park.

He’s pictured below. He was off duty, therefore not in uniform, but yes, this is where he works.

One of the tenets of a Rainbow education is environmental sustainability; we hope that influence follows RCS students their whole lives.
