Poetry SLAM!

Poetry Slam to benefit MANNA food bank

Poetry Slam to benefit MANNA food bank

We have another wonderful event on the horizon: a Soulspeak Poetry Slam!

This is a benefit for Manna Food Bank.

It’s Saturday, December 13th at 7pm at the RCS Auditorium.

You can hear Asheville’s best and brightest recite and share their poems.

A Benefit for Manna…

Many youth poets have toured MANNA and volunteered over the past few weeks to learn more about the issue of hunger in our community.

They will be presenting poems about this at the slam.

Last year they raised $1000 and over 5000 lbs. of food!

This year, they want to double that!

The acapella group from Asheville High will join them that evening, as well to share some holiday music.

It is going to be an amazing event.

Thank you for all your help and support.

We hope to see you there!

Celebrations, Plays, and Events Galore!

Celebrations, Plays, and Events Galore!

RCS Students Engaged in So Many Activities!

If you were on campus this past Wednesday, then  you’d know that we were bustling with so many events centered around experiential education and holistic learning.

First Grade

Then first grade was hosting the Cold Mountain Cloggers. They have been studying a unit on Appalachia, learning about food, customs, food and dancing! They had a great time learning the steps to effective clogging, a true mountain tradition. Here’s a video of our cloggers:

Omega Students

At the outdoor stage Omega students were rehearsing for their play. They’re doing a mythology unit, and we caught them on camera. The class was divided into three groups, each one doing a scene from Clash of the Titans. Here was a snapshot from the scene, Story of Perseus. Students were working on lines and their acting, and by the looks of it, they were doing really well!

Second Grade

Next stop was second grade. They were celebrating the culmination of their unit studying the Cherokee. They had a feast, and the students presented on their knowledge of the Cherokee Native American Indians. They demonstrated how to make a fire, and shared various crafts they learned how to make.

Fifth Grade

The fifth grade also had a feast. Students had to make a meal based off of a recipe from colonial times. They had just finished studying the early colonies, making crafts, maps and sharing their knowledge of early U.S. history.

Song Circle

Students that weren’t part of another activity attended Song Circle around 11:50. They sang a few catchy tunes.

Sixth Grade

Over in sixth grade, students have been working on a project with Homeward Bound. They are trying to furnish an apartment for a homeless family in Asheville. Yesterday, they picked up a couch in north Asheville and delivered it to the school. Students are storing furniture on campus until they will take it to the apartment that Homeward Bound will provide.

They also held a fundraiser recently to help with the costs of furnishing the apartment.

The RCS First Annual Art Show

The RCS First Annual Art Show

Rainbow Community’s Artist Reception

Food. Wine. Jazzy music. Great conversation. Fabulous art.

The First Annual RCS Art Show was a hit!

Lots of local and regional artists’ work were in the show and the school created an art page for the artwork. The page will remain active on Rainbow’s website for two more weeks, so if you were thinking about buying a great work of art, you still have a chance!

If you were able to attend the event, and tried the food, it was incredible! Tina Crain catered the food and if you need a caterer that uses the finest quality food for delicious taste, check out her website, Chestnut Flats.

Here’s a sampling of the amazing food:

There was gluten-free pumpkin bread, and other delectable finger foods:

The beauty and quality of all the art was simply exquisite. People were able to have conversations around many of the art pieces.

Darrah, a Rainbow parent, facilitated the event and worked hard to put it all together.

From the website, to the food, to the setup, she stepped up to the plate and created an event that everyone enjoyed. A special thank you goes out to her for all the hard work she did.

RCS also wants to extend its gratitude to Wicked Weed, and Jeffie Cilano for the white wine.

50% of all the art sales support the RCS Combined Campaign. The other 50% goes directly to the artists.

Many RCS parents and families came to the event, as did folks from the greater Asheville community. Thank you to everyone who supported the event!
