Rainbow’s second grade Cheetahs, as part of their thematic unit on community, have been busy designing what they envision as a peaceful town to live in.
After learning about communities they discussed and decided what a peaceful town would look like. Then they partnered up, and with much imagination, compromising and possibly negotiation, drafted their ideas into a large map. Soon after the plans were approved and all permits attained they started construction, building their Peace Towns with cardboard boxes, paper and paint. They then added people and plants and all kinds of extras.
“The project was completely student driven,” says Sheila Mraz, the second grade teacher. Each building needed to be an example of peace. One Peace Town had a grocery store that gave food away and a farm which showed a family having dinner because there is peace in a family. Another town had a non-religious school where no one’s holidays would be more important than anyone else’s.
Today, in honor of International Peace Day, Rainbow’s second grade invited the other classes to come tour their Peace Towns. It was well received and even a fifth grader was overheard to say he would like to make his own Peace Town. Following our second grade Cheetahs, we can all make our town, a more peaceful town.

Recently the second graders had an interesting project;
Dear 2nd grade Frogs,
It is very difficult to catch a tricky leprechaun, but you and your family can have a great deal of fun trying! Who knows, maybe youโll get lucky. The first thing you need to do is build a trap. There is no right or wrong way to build a leprechaun trap.
You can make your contraption with a net, boxes, sticks, or anything else you can think of such as paper towel rolls, empty containers, tin foil, paper, string, yarn, etc. How about using an old shoe? Remember, you must be clever to catch a leprechaun so give this project some time, thought and effort- maybe even planning it out on paper first.
Once you build your trap, donโt forget to add bait to help lure the leprechaun. Since Leprechauns are very greedy, one of the best things you can use for bait are coins! They especially like anything shiny. They also love rainbows, four leaf clovers and round stones.
Make sure your trap is well disguised. It needs to blend into its surroundings or the leprechauns will not come anywhere near your trap. You will bring your trap to school on Tuesday, March 15th and leave it in the classroom. No two traps should be alike or the leprechauns will get suspicious and leave. So, make sure to use your own ideas.
When your trap is done, write a story about the leprechaun that will come to visit your trap. Make it an exciting and entertaining adventure. Your story needs to have an exciting beginning to interest the reader, a middle with some type of problem and an ending with a solution. You will be reading your story to the class on Tuesday, March 15th.
Have fun and may the luck of the Irish be with you!
Sincerely,
Sheila Mraz

Thursday was Hero Day, our fourth day of Spirit Week. We dressed up as Jane Goodall, John Muir, an astronaut, moms, doctors, and Mr. Rodgers. At lunch we ate with each other and shared who are heroes were. Then we played chase.

Middle School Teachers, Susan & Jason, dressed up as a collective of their middle school students. Nice.

RMCSรย second gradersรย spent their thirdรย week of schoolรย exploring community on the ecological level by discussing the inter-relationships (or web of life) between all living and non-livingรย things in the forest. In an effort to bridge the รขโฌลweb of lifeรขโฌย concept from the forest to society, theyรย brainstormed the people and places needed to make a town function.รย Afterwards, theyรย read a beautiful story about children creating their own town called Roxaboxen. Then, with great enthusiasm, the second graders createdรย their own models of Roxaboxen, complete with village characters made of clay.รย By week’s end,รย a wholeรย imaginary village appeared on the school’s deck for the wider RMCS community to admire and enjoy.
