Assessments
Authentic assessments gauge student understanding in meaningful waysAssessments
Omega Middle School embraces a method of authentic assessment. This approach allows for authentic, student-centered, active, and meaningful evaluations.
Authentic assessment challenges students with relevant and meaningful tasks. This empowers them to take control of their own learning.
Teachers evaluate student performance throughout the year. They use robust forms of authentic evaluation such as essays, portfolios, presentations, debates, projects, and some formal standardized testing.
Self-reflection is also an integral component in our approach. This is a daily process. Teachers also evaluate effort and performance to help determine final grades.
Parents receive lengthy narrative reports three times yearly that highlight strengths and challenges in all subjects and in all the Seven Domains of learning.
Child-centered curriculum
Omega uses the Educational Records Bureau Comprehensive Testing Program (CPT) as our norm referenced standardized test.
Omega also uses Lectica Assessments which are formative, standardized educational tests that assess students’ complexity of thinking and ability to reason ethically.
This work is based out of research from the Mind, Brain, and Education program at Harvard Graduate School of Education, and the work of Kurt Fischer, a Lectica board member.
The founder of Lectica talks about RCS student test results and their meaning here. Omega students outperform other schools.
LectaTest
Our students recently took the LectaTest. These target a specific set of practical skills and concepts, such as those involved in leadership decision-making, ethical reasoning, mindfulness, or self-understanding. Still, other assessment markers examine skills like collaborative capacity, decision-making process, contextual reasoning, and perspective coordination.
