More Scheduling Information
CENTERING– Begins at 8:35AM every day. Tuesdays and Thursdays, students lead centering. On these days, students choose the centering activity for that day, but still follow a routine. They choose and write a relevant quote on the board for others to write in centering journals, light a candle and lead the group in 3 breaths, a group discussion of quotes, a centering activity. They close with deep breaths and by extinguishing the candle.
MATH– Math is every day of the week. Math begins with a warm-up, followed by homework review, lessons and notes, and end with a bit of time to begin homework, to facilitate questions.
SNACK– is simple and this time lasts 15 minutes. On Wednesdays, students eat their snack during the last 10 minutes of math class. Snacks on Wednesdays need to remain simple – a bar of granola, some fruit, or yogurt – as students will be working while eating.
MAIN LESSON– Each Omega teacher leads a part of the curriculum.
Susan Waddell
Omega 7/8 Language Arts Lead Teacher
Niki Gilbert
Omega 7/8 Science Lead Teacher
Richard Risbridger
Omega 7/8 Social Studies Lead Teacher
Richard teaches the Social Studies curriculum. Niki heads the Science curriculum, and Susan leads the language Language Arts curriculum. Omega teachers combine literature units with themes in both Science and Social Studies in addition to practicing formal writing skills. The Omega class is split into two groups, A and B.
LUNCH/RECESS– There is no microwave in Omega – 40 plus students means there is not enough time for everyone to get a chance and our recess time is precious! For students who prefer warm lunches they are encouraged to keep food warm in a thermos.
SPECIALS / ELECTIVES – These tie into the course curriculum as much as possible. Specials classes are graded courses that include Music, PE, Health and more, and are required courses. Electives are students’ choice and not graded.
MYSTERIES – this includes both Mysteries Council and Gender Mysteries.
Gender Mysteries happen about once a month and groups are separated. In this circle, students address topics such as body image, self-love, heritage, customs, accessing personal power, etc.
Mysteries Council occurs with all Omegans and occurs once per month. In this circle, students have an opportunity to discuss the “unknown” and the questions that arise within them that do not necessarily have answers. This circle is not about elders providing answers but rather the elders providing a space that allows for the questions to exist in comfort.
CLASS MEETINGS – These occur every Friday. Students will participate in a class meeting that is run Dynamic Governance-style, or, sociocratically. These meetings go over current issues, problem solving, and decision-making (from themes for special events to daily rituals and procedures that need changes). The agendas for these meetings hang in a general space and allow students to add issues or ideas that may come up during the week.
